How to convert a GIF to a sprite sheet

  1. Choose your GIF

Open an animated GIF from your device, or try a built-in example to explore the controls.

  2. Set the layout

Choose the columns, spacing, and scale. Check the final sheet dimensions as you adjust.

  3. Check the animation

Preview the frames in sequence. Keep the original timing or choose a uniform playback rate.

  4. Export your sheet

Download the PNG and JSON frame data. The JSON records frame positions and playback timing.

A sheet holds the pictures. The data holds the timing.

A PNG is a still image. Keep the accompanying JSON if you need to reconstruct the animation at its original pace. Switching to a uniform FPS changes that playback rhythm.

A few useful answers

GIF conversion, explained.

Already have individual PNG frames? Use the Sprite Sheet Maker.

How are the GIF frames arranged?

Frames are laid out from left to right, then top to bottom. The column count controls where each new row begins; spacing leaves room between frames.

Will my GIF keep its original timing?

The original timing option preserves frame durations in the exported JSON and the animation preview. The PNG itself cannot store playback timing. If you choose a uniform FPS, use the new durations from the export when playing the animation.

Does the PNG keep transparent areas?

The sheet uses a transparent background. Transparent areas in the decoded frames stay transparent; a background already painted into your GIF stays part of the artwork.

Can I import the result into my game engine?

The PNG can be used wherever a sprite sheet image is supported. The JSON describes this tool’s frame coordinates and timing; it is not a promise of automatic import into a particular engine. Follow your engine’s sprite slicing and animation setup steps.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Conversion and export happen in your browser. Keep the downloaded files before closing the page; this tool does not save your project to an account.

Can I convert a video with this tool?

This converter takes GIF files. If you already have a PNG image sequence, combine it with the Sprite Sheet Maker.
